An Eco-Friendly 2012

Bring in the new year with a fresh look at life and a few new tips and tricks to keep our world beautiful for generations to come.
Avoid waste:  Recycle.  For every trash can of waste you put outside for the trash collector, about 70 trash cans of waste are used in order to create that trash.  To reduce the amount of waste you produce, buy products in returnable and recyclable containers and recycle as much as you can.
Put a blanket on your water heater.  If your hot water storage system is more than a few years old, chances are it may not be insulated sufficiently.  The easiest way to tell is to feel the sides of the tank; if it’s warm, you’ll probably benefit from a water heater blanket.  Insulating your water heater can reduce heat loss by 25%-40%, which represents an annual savings of around 9%.  Visit http://www.greenlivingtips.com/articles/139/1/Hot-water-heater-blankets.html to learn more.
Sign up for green energy.  More than half of all electricity consumers in the U.S. now have the option of purchasing green power from their utility.  Check with your current utility provider to see what's available to go to the Department of Energy's state-by-state list of providers at www.doe.gov.
Extend the life of your computer & monitor.  The Department of Energy recommends shutting off your monitor if you aren't going to use it for more than 20 minutes, and your computer if you're not going to use it for more than two hours.   The agency says the time spent off extends your machine's life while saving money.  Source
