As we move right along into summer, we will be spending more time being outside and enjoying all that summer has to offer.  Here are a few ways you can support your earth in yourown home.
Plant a native species tree.   In addition to providing beauty and financial value to your property, trees benefit the environment in many ways including water/run-off reduction, providing habitat to wildlife, and reducing carbon.  Learn more about tree care at www.arborday.org.
Make your dishwasher more efficient.    Run your dishwasher when it's full, using environmentally-friendly soap without phosphate or chlorine.  Turning off the dry cycle also saves energy and money.  When buying a new dishwasher, remember to look for Energy Star-rated appliances for energy efficiency.
International Day for Biological Diversity is May 22.   The UN proclaimed May 22 the IDB to increase understanding and awareness of  biodiversity issues.  2011 has been designated as the International Year of Forests.  Visit http://www.cbd.int/idb/2011/ to learn more about sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forest.

Save a tree (and a bird) - buy recycled paper products.  The logging of the boreal forest in Canada and Siberia is happening so quickly, the many songbirds that live there are being negatively impacted.  Choose recycled napkins, paper towels, office paper and other paper products. (Reusable towels and napkins are even better!)
